Tooth Decay

Bacteria are present in everyone’s mouths. This is normal. These bacteria, when mixed with food and proteins, form plaque on our teeth. When the bacteria in plaque are exposed to sugars and carbohydrates, they make acids which attack the teeth. If this process is allowed to continue, a hole can form in the tooth. This hole is called a cavity and the process is dental decay. Sometimes these cavities may only be seen on dental x-rays. Dental decay should be addressed in its earliest stages. If left untreated, it will grow in size and can lead to tooth fractures, root canals and/or crowns, or even ultimate loss of the tooth.

Discover the advantages of tooth-colored fillings

Composite or white fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings, are created to enhance the appearance of your smile while providing a less invasive treatment option. These fillings use a composite resin that bonds directly to your tooth, preventing bacteria and decay. Unlike metal fillings, tooth-colored fillings require minimal enamel removal, allowing you to maintain more of your natural tooth structure.

Receiving Tooth-Colored Fillings: A Step-By-Step Guide

If you're looking for a cavity solution that doesn't involve metal, we offer tooth-colored fillings that bond directly to your tooth without removing excessive enamel. Our dentists will only remove the decayed portion, preserving more of your tooth's original structure and ensuring a longer-lasting filling compared to metal fillings.

The process begins with numbing the treatment area to ensure your comfort. You may feel slight pressure, but there should be no pain. The damaged part of the tooth will be removed, and then the composite resin will be applied layer by layer until the tooth is restored to its optimal size and shape. Using a curing light, the material will be hardened into place, creating a strong bond with your enamel. Finally, we will polish the tooth and check your bite to ensure a proper fit.

With proper oral hygiene and regular checkups and cleanings, you can expect your tooth-colored filling to last approximately ten years before needing replacement. However, it's important to note that these fillings can stain similarly to natural teeth. To minimize staining, it's best to limit your consumption of foods and beverages that can discolor your teeth, such as coffee and dark sauces. If you do consume these items, be sure to brush your teeth or rinse with water immediately afterward.
