Missing teeth can be a problem because the teeth around the space can shift and move. The teeth behind can tilt forwards, the teeth above can drop down, and spaces can open up. All of this can lead to hygienic and esthetic problems. When talking about filling a space, there are three commonly used ways to replace a missing tooth. The first option is an implant. This is where a metal post is placed in the jaw and a crown is placed on that after it has healed. Advantages of an implant are that if functions the most like a normal tooth and it conserves tooth structure on the adjoining teeth. The second option is a bridge. This is where the tooth in front of and behind the space are prepared for crowns, and a one-piece unit is fabricated that fills the space and covers all the teeth. Advantages are that insurance will often help cover the cost, it is quick (usually completed in about 2 weeks), and it is fixed in place. The third option is that of a partial denture. This is either all acrylic or part metal and part acrylic. These are custom-made for your mouth. The advantage of this option is that it is the most cost effective.
